Are You Being Guided by Your Intuition or Your Ego?

How do you know if your decisions are coming from intuition—or from ego?

This distinction matters more than most people realize.

Because the source of your decisions shapes not only your outcomes, but also how you experience your life.

Many people who follow their intuition describe their lives as more meaningful and aligned.
Those driven primarily by ego may achieve success—but often find themselves questioning why it doesn’t feel the way they expected.

Why This Distinction Matters

Both intuition and ego serve a purpose.

  • Ego is focused on protection. It wants to keep you safe, in control, and within what feels predictable.

  • Intuition is focused on alignment. It guides you toward what feels true, even when it’s unfamiliar or uncomfortable.

Neither is inherently “bad.”

But when ego dominates your decisions, it can quietly limit your growth.

6 Key Differences Between Intuition and Ego

While there are no rigid rules, these patterns can help you recognize what’s driving your decisions:

1. Ego Is Fear-Based. Intuition Is Steady.

Ego often shows up as fear:

  • “What if this fails?”

  • “What if I’m not good enough?”

  • “I shouldn’t risk this.”

It pushes you toward safety—even when that safety keeps you stuck.

Intuition, on the other hand, feels calm and grounded.
It doesn’t panic—it guides.

2. Ego Is Reactive. Intuition Feels Clear.

Ego-driven thoughts often come with strong emotional charge:

  • Frustration

  • Resentment

  • Urgency

For example:
“This place would fall apart without me.”

Intuition feels different.

It’s quieter.
Clearer.
Often simple—without needing to prove itself.

3. Ego Focuses on External Outcomes

Ego is often concerned with:

  • Status

  • Recognition

  • Approval

  • Financial comparison

Ask yourself:

  • Am I doing this to be seen a certain way?

  • Or because I genuinely feel drawn to it?

Intuition is connected to internal alignment—not external validation.

4. Ego Justifies. Intuition Doesn’t Need To.

Ego is very persuasive.

It uses logic, reasoning, and stories to convince you:

  • “I shouldn’t take that step—the timing isn’t right.”

  • “People like me don’t do things like that.”

  • “It’s safer to stay where I am.”

Intuition doesn’t argue.

It presents itself—and remains steady.

5. Ego Judges. Intuition Observes.

Ego tends to label things:

  • Right or wrong

  • Good or bad

  • Safe or dangerous

Intuition does not judge.

It offers a sense of knowing—without criticism or pressure.

6. Ego Seeks External Validation. Intuition Is Internally Driven

Ask yourself:

  • Would I still make this decision if no one else knew about it?

  • Am I doing this for how it looks—or how it feels?

Ego looks outward.
Intuition looks inward.

Why Ego Isn’t the Enemy

It’s important to understand:

Your ego is trying to protect you.

It’s built around self-preservation:

  • Avoid risk

  • Avoid discomfort

  • Stay within what feels known

That’s not wrong.

But it can keep you in your comfort zone long after you’ve outgrown it.

How to Make Better Decisions

The goal isn’t to eliminate ego.

It’s to recognize when fear is holding you back from something meaningful.

Before making a decision, pause and ask:

  • Is this coming from fear—or from clarity?

  • Am I avoiding discomfort—or moving toward growth?

  • Does this feel aligned, even if it’s challenging?

This moment of awareness changes everything.

Building the Skill of Discernment

Learning to distinguish between ego and intuition is a skill.

It takes:

  • Awareness

  • Practice

  • Reflection

  • Structure

In my work with clients, we don’t just talk about this—we build the ability to:

  • Recognize these patterns quickly

  • Understand what’s driving a decision

  • Move forward with clarity and confidence

Because when you can clearly identify what’s guiding you, your decisions become much more effective.

Self-Reflection

Use these prompts to begin:

  • When have I made a decision based on fear rather than alignment?

  • What does my intuition typically feel like when I notice it?

  • Where in my life might ego be keeping me smaller than I’m capable of?

  • What decision have I been avoiding that I already know the answer to?

What Makes This Work Different

This work goes beyond simply “trusting yourself.”

It’s about learning how to:

  • Recognize internal signals clearly

  • Separate fear from intuitive guidance

  • Make decisions with confidence

  • Take action based on clarity—not hesitation

Through structured coaching, clients develop the ability to navigate decisions in a way that creates both progress and alignment.
